01 — My Story
From the tools to the table.
This isn't a résumé. It's the version that actually taught me something.
I started as an electrician and have spent more than 27 years in the trade.
In 2014 I founded Farryn Electric with technical ability, work ethic, and not much else.
The company grew to about 13 electricians — and I learned, the hard way, that doing good work and building a healthy business are not the same thing.
We became too dependent on one contractor and one customer. Growth outpaced our structure, and I lived through real financial pressure and setbacks.
I had to pivot. We shifted toward a residential service model and rebuilt the fundamentals — customer experience, proposals, communication, standards, and systems.
I learned that boundaries are part of leadership, and that a business shouldn't be completely dependent on the owner.
Farryn became stronger, more organized, more profitable, and more valuable. I sold the company in December 2021.
My family and I moved to Costa Rica, which gave me time to reconsider identity, success, ownership, freedom, and purpose.
I realized the lessons I'd earned could help other owners. That became Coast Light Value Advisors — and the foundation for The Soul of a Business.
“For a long time I thought I owned the business. It took a while to admit the business owned me.”
